Marmaris and Fethiye are large coastal towns, both well worth visiting, and good for shopping. From Fethiye you can take a dolmus (shared bus) to visit the much-photographed lagoon at Olu Deniz. The local market town, Ortaca, has a bus station, from which you can take the bus to many places of interest.

Fethiye was known as Telmessos in the ancient period, being the most important city of Lycia. As a regional centre it continues to grow in importance, and marks the place where the Aegean Sea becomes the Mediterranean. Gocek, on the way to Fethiye, is a pleasant small town with a large marina and is the starting point for the 12 island yacht trip. The surrounding area is largely tree-covered hills and mountains, which themselves offer many different excursions, and the freedom to go trekking. There are many other sites of natural or archaelogical interest within reach. Among them is Saklikent, a magnificent gorge outside Fethiye, and the sites of Xanthos, Tlos and Ephesus.
