After a short spell of rule from Rhodes in 190-167 BC, Caunos was again independent in the years 167-129 BC and was integrated in 129 to the Province of Asia established by the Romans. During the Mithradatic wars in 88-84 BC the Roman forces punished Caunians because of their opposition by submitting them to the Rhodian rule (at the time severely disliked).
Though the city gained its independence soon enough, it remained under Roman juridiction. The city was still important during early Christianity; it was represented by one Bishop. But it was from this period onwards that the city gradually lost its importance, its few remaining inhabitants living for a short time upon the Acropolis.
