The ancient city of Caunos was named after a King of the same name, said to be the son of Miletus. According to legend, Koycegiz Lake was created from his aunt's tears after his father had spurned her. Originally a Lycian port, Caunos was captured by Persians in 387 BC. It then was to become a free city of Rome, under the jurisdiction of Rhodes. Various civilisations made their mark on the city.
Pictured left is one of the first Christian Churches. The Roman baths are startling in their size and complexity; comprising an area where the water was pre-heated, and the main pool itself. The original piping is still visible.
