The ancient city of Caunos was named after a King of the same name, said to be the son of Miletus. According to legend, Koycegiz Lake was created from his aunt's tears after his father had spurned her. Originally a Lycian port, Caunos was captured by Persians in 387 BC. It then was to become a free city of Rome, under the jurisdiction of Rhodes. Various civilisations made their mark on the city. |
